Does Every Muscle Pain Need a Physiotherapist?

When your muscles are sore, tight or painful, your first thought might be to see a physiotherapist. Physiotherapy can be an excellent choice for injuries, rehabilitation and movement-related problems — but not every muscle ache or muscular tension necessarily requires physiotherapy.

Sometimes, what your body needs is focused hands-on care from a qualified remedial massage therapist with good skills in myofascial trigger point therapy, and they communicate with you to get the most painful trigger points so they can be released correctly. (This is not just pock and move to another area without full release, as most massage therapists do, so I have been told by my clients who have been to other massage therapists.

Your muscles can become painful for many reasons

Every day life can put a lot of stress on your muscles. Long hours sitting at a desk, physical work, exercise, repetitive movements, poor posture and stress can all contribute to muscle tension and discomfort.

You may notice:

  • Tight shoulders and neck

  • Lower back muscle tension

  • Sore or tired legs

  • Tight hips

  • Muscles that feel stiff after exercise

  • General muscular aches and tension

  • Areas that feel overworked or fatigued

These are situations where remedial massage may be able to help.

What can a remedial massage therapist do?

Remedial massage focuses on the body's soft tissues and is tailored to your individual needs. Your therapist can assess areas of muscular tension and use appropriate massage techniques to help release tightness, encourage relaxation and support your body's natural recovery.

The goal isn't simply to give you a relaxing massage. Remedial massage is about understanding where your muscular tension is coming from and providing targeted treatment based on your needs.

Massage and physiotherapy can work together

Seeing a remedial massage therapist doesn't mean you have to choose against physiotherapy.

Physiotherapists and remedial massage therapists have different areas of expertise, and in some situations their services can complement each other. A physiotherapist may be the right professional for injury rehabilitation, movement assessment and prescribed exercises, while remedial massage may be useful when muscular tension, tightness or soft-tissue discomfort is the main concern.

The important thing is choosing the right type of care for your individual situation.

When remedial massage may be worth considering

If you're feeling tight, tense, sore or physically worn out, and you don't have a serious or unexplained injury, a remedial massage may be a suitable option to consider.

Your body doesn't always need more exercise or another quick fix. Sometimes it needs someone to listen to what your muscles are telling you.

Give your muscles the attention they deserve

As a remedial massage therapist, I aim to provide personalised treatment based on how your body feels and what you want to achieve from your session.

If you're experiencing everyday muscle tension, stiffness or soreness, remedial massage may be the support your body has been asking for.

Book a session and give your muscles some well-deserved care.
