Scope of Practice – Clinical, Science-Based Care for Pain and Stress Management
At Athletic Sports Massage Canberra, all services are delivered using a clinical, evidence-informed framework that recognises the complex interaction between pain, stress, and the nervous system. Treatment is fully individualised and adapted to each client’s symptoms, goals, and physical demands, ensuring care is both safe and effective.
My work is guided by contemporary research in pain science, biomechanics, and nervous system regulation. Rather than relying on outdated concepts such as “breaking down knots” or “fixing damaged tissue,” the focus is on understanding how your body is responding to load, stress, recovery, and movement demands. This approach recognises that pain and tension are often influenced by nervous system sensitivity, training volume, recovery capacity, and context—not solely by local tissue changes.
Care is designed to support clients in multiple ways, including:
- Reducing muscular tension and stress-related holding patterns.
- Supporting nervous system balance and relaxation.
- Assisting with the management of persistent or activity-related pain.
- Promoting tissue comfort, circulation, and ease of movement.
- Encouraging body awareness and practical self-care strategies.
All sessions are fully adaptable and delivered with a focus on safety, comfort, and individual clinical needs. Services can be accessed independently or alongside other allied health and medical care, making them suitable for anyone seeking improved recovery, reduced stress, enhanced physical ease, and support with pain management. Athletic Sports Massage Canberra values collaborative care and works closely with allied health professionals to promote consistent, sustainable wellbeing outcomes. Where clinically appropriate, established regular clients may also receive complimentary sports myofascial cupping at no additional cost.
Important Safety Client Information
My massage table is set up for smaller or athletic body types, so I’m currently unable to accommodate clients living with obesity safely, as I don't have the training to deal with clients with obesity or the equipment. This ensures every session is comfortable, safe, and effective. If this affects you, I encourage you to seek clinics with equipment designed for larger body types, so you can enjoy massage safely. Your comfort and well-being are always my priority.

Full-time Pilates high-level instructor
I honestly can’t recommend Ray at Canberra Athletic Sports Massage enough.
I’m a full-time Pilates instructor, so my body is literally my job, and ongoing shoulder pain was starting to seriously affect my work and quality of life. Before seeing Ray, I had tried everything including doctors, physios, chiros and osteos. While some helped a little, nothing made a real difference long term.
In one session with Ray, I felt more relief than I had after over six months of seeing a physio and chiro. That alone says everything. I’ve been seeing Ray for about six months now and the improvement in my shoulder has been huge. I also have endometriosis, and he has been incredible at helping manage the pain that comes with that as well. Every session is tailored to how I am actually feeling on the day, which makes such a difference when your body can change week to week.
Ray is extremely knowledgeable and uses a mix of techniques like trigger point therapy, cupping and more traditional treatments. Nothing ever feels rushed or generic. He genuinely takes the time to understand what is going on and treats what actually needs attention.
Because of how much Ray has helped me, he is the only person I refer my clients to. That is how much I trust his work and the impact it has had on my life. If you are dealing with injuries, chronic pain, or feel stuck after trying everything else, I cannot recommend Ray highly enough. Kimberly 14/12/25
