About Ray’s Open-Minded Health & Wellness Blog
Practical Insights for Women’s Health, Movement and Wellbeing
Welcome to Ray’s Open-Minded Blog, a collection of thoughtful articles exploring health, wellness, movement, recovery, massage therapy and the many factors that can influence how we feel in our bodies.
I’m Ray Flaherty, a Canberra-based sports and remedial massage therapist with more than 20 years of experience in sports, injuries, pain and muscle management, along with more than 30 years of experience in massage and martial arts. My professional background has given me a strong interest in understanding how the body moves, how muscular tension can affect everyday life, and how individualised massage therapy can support better movement and recovery.
Why I Write
Health and wellness information can sometimes be confusing, overly complicated or influenced by massage myths and assumptions. My aim with this blog is to provide open-minded, practical and informative perspectives that encourage readers to think more deeply about their bodies and their wellbeing.
The articles explore topics that may be relevant to women who experience muscular tension, physical discomfort, restricted movement, exercise-related demands, recovery concerns or the everyday effects of work and lifestyle.
My approach is evidence-informed and individualised. Massage does not magically heal an injury—the body has its own natural healing processes. My role is to help create an environment that supports recovery by working with areas of tension, restriction and dysfunction and helping clients move more comfortably.
A Blog With an Open Mind
Being open-minded means being willing to consider different perspectives while still asking sensible questions about the information we encounter.
Through my articles, I explore subjects connected with:
Massage therapy and body awareness
Muscle tension, discomfort and restricted movement
Sports, exercise and recovery
Women's health and changing physical needs
Menopause and related well-being considerations
Movement, flexibility and body mechanics
Stress, relaxation and overall well-being
Common ideas and misconceptions surrounding massage
Holistic approaches to health and self-care
The purpose is not to tell every reader that there is one solution for every problem. Everybody is different, and what may be appropriate for one person may not be appropriate for another.
How the Blog Connects With My Massage Practice
My blog is an extension of the same philosophy I bring into my treatment room: listen first, understand the individual, then tailor the approach.
At Athletic Sports Massage Canberra, I provide professional massage therapy exclusively for women, with treatments designed around individual needs and goals. Services include functional sports massage and functional remedial massage, with techniques selected according to the client's presentation and treatment requirements.
My additional training and experience in areas including women's health, menopause awareness, endometriosis awareness and PTSD awareness have helped broaden my understanding of the different physical and personal factors women may experience throughout life.
If You’re Looking for More Than a Routine Massage
If you have been experiencing ongoing muscular tightness, neck and shoulder tension, postural strain, reduced flexibility or general muscular discomfort, an individualised approach may be worth considering. Functional massage therapy at my Canberra clinic is designed around the person's symptoms, movement patterns, lifestyle and goals rather than simply following the same routine for everyone.
The blog is here to help you become better informed. If something you read raises questions about your own situation, you are welcome to discuss your concerns with me and find out whether massage therapy may be appropriate for your needs.
