Lymphatic Drainage

Improves your Lymphatic Drainage at Athletic Sports Massage Canberra

Lymph Wellness

I specialise in women’s health and have over 10 years of clinical experience in this field. As a male remedial massage therapist working in women’s health, I understand that patient comfort is essential. If you would prefer care from a different practitioner, I encourage you to seek a provider who aligns with your comfort level.

This session focuses specifically on the management of localised swelling associated with lymphoedema, particularly in the legs, ankles, and arms. I do not provide full-body lymphatic drainage.

Lymphoedema commonly develops following cancer treatment involving lymph node dissection or radiation therapy, such as after a mastectomy. When lymphatic transport capacity is reduced, protein-rich interstitial fluid can accumulate in affected regions, leading to chronic swelling, tissue fibrosis, heaviness, discomfort, and increased infection risk.

The lymphatic system is distributed throughout the body. When part of the system is compromised, compensatory pathways may become overloaded, contributing to distal swelling — including in the upper or lower limbs.

Manual therapy, when delivered appropriately and within the scope of practice, may assist in:

  • Facilitating superficial lymphatic drainage in affected regions.
  • Reducing tissue congestion and associated discomfort.
  • Supporting mobility and functional movement.
  • Assisting in softening mild secondary tissue changes.

Treatment is performed using gentle, evidence-informed techniques consistent with principles used in conservative lymphoedema management. Massage therapy should be integrated into a broader care plan that may include medical supervision, compression therapy, exercise prescription, and self-management strategies.

I work with individuals managing severe chronic pain, post-surgical recovery (including spinal surgery and mastectomy), amputees, sports injuries, and complex physical health conditions. I have supported many women experiencing limb swelling following breast cancer treatment.

All care is delivered conservatively and in alignment with current understanding of lymphatic physiology. Clients are encouraged to remain under the guidance of their primary healthcare provider when managing lymphoedema.

Here's how massage can help:

1. Improves Lymphatic Drainage

  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD): A specialised, gentle massage technique that stimulates the lymphatic system to improve the flow of lymph fluid. This helps reduce swelling and promotes better fluid balance in the affected area.

2. Reduces Swelling and Pain

  • Massage can alleviate the discomfort associated with fluid retention, reducing pressure on nerves and tissues.
  • Enhancing circulation can help decrease inflammation, which in turn can aid in pain relief.

3. Enhances Mobility

  • Reducing swelling can improve the range of motion in affected limbs, allowing for more comfortable movement and daily activities.

4. Supports Immune Function

  • The lymphatic system plays a critical role in immune defence. Stimulating lymph flow through massage can enhance the body's ability to fight infections.

5. Promotes Relaxation

  • Chronic conditions like lymphoedema can be stressful. Massage therapy helps reduce stress hormones, promoting overall well-being and mental relaxation.

6. Improves Skin and Tissue Health

  • Gentle massage increases blood circulation, which nourishes the skin and underlying tissues. This can help prevent complications such as skin hardening (fibrosis) and infections like cellulitis.
