1. Purpose

At Athletic Sports Massage Canberra, our mission is to provide exceptional care and support with a focus on women’s health and wellness. In alignment with this mission, we are no longer accepting new male clients.

We deeply value the trust and loyalty of our existing male clients, who are welcome to continue receiving pain management and sports massage services with us.

Thank you for your understanding as we continue to focus our expertise and resources on empowering women through health, wellness, and recovery.

Athletic Sports Massage Canberra is dedicated to maintaining a safe, professional, and supportive environment designed specifically around the needs of women, ensuring the highest standards of care and comfort.

This policy outlines our approach to new male client acceptance to uphold the safety, well-being and integrity of our practice.

2. General Policy

  • Due to repeated instances of inappropriate or boundary-crossing behaviour from a small number of male clients, we have implemented this policy to cease accepting new male clients, except under specific, limited conditions      (see Section 3).
  • New male clients will generally not be accepted for standard massage services.
  • This decision is based on recurring issues that have impacted the emotional safety, time, and overall well-being of our therapists and clients.

Examples of behaviours contributing to this policy include:

  1. Repeated disregard for professional boundaries.
  2. Inappropriate comments or conduct.
  3. Failure to attend appointments or repeated last-minute cancellations.
  4. Attempts to turn professional interactions into personal or flirtatious engagements.

While these behaviours do not reflect all male clients, this policy is necessary to maintain a safe, respectful, and professional environment for all.

3. Exceptions

New male clients may be considered on a case-by-case basis under the following conditions:

  1. The client presents with a documented chronic pain condition or injury     (not involving the groin or any area below the waist). Treatment will be limited to pain management for the shoulder, neck, and upper back areas only.
  2. The lient provides referral notes, medical reports, or treatment goals from a qualified healthcare professional before coming for a remedial assessment session for pain management.
  3. Acceptance is determined based on:
    • The nature and location of the injury.
    • The type and purpose of the requested treatment.
    • The availability and discretion of the practice.

Eligible clients may contact the clinic via the [Contact Page or text] to discuss their situation.

4. Existing Male Clients

  • Existing male clients who maintain a professional and respectful relationship are welcome to continue booking as usual.
  • The clinic reserves the right to decline or discontinue services if a client’s behaviour becomes inconsistent with the safe, ethical, and professional standards of the practice.

5. Key Notes

  • This policy applies only to new male clients.
  • The primary goal is to maintain a safe, respectful, and professional environment for all clients and staff.
  • Management reserves the right to enforce this policy consistently to protect the well-being practice and its members.

1. Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to ensure the safety, comfort, and professional care of all clients attending Athletic Sports Massage Canberra. Due to current equipment and facility limitations, the clinic is unable to safely accommodate clients with obesity. This policy establishes clear guidelines for when and why services may be respectfully declined to maintain client and therapist safety.

2. Policy Statement

At Athletic Sports Massage Canberra, safety is our highest priority. Our treatment tables, equipment, and sports massage techniques are designed for clients of typical athletic body composition. Unfortunately, these facilities are not suitable or rated for use by clients with obesity.

For this reason, the clinic reserves the right to respectfully decline service where it is determined that treatment cannot be provided safely or effectively.

This decision is based solely on health and safety considerations, not on body image or discrimination.

3. Safety Considerations

3.1. Massage tables and equipment have manufacturer-specified weight, and Athletics Sports Massage Canberra has a size limit to be able to safely massage a client without danger to them all ourselves, which can and has caused Ray to get injured several times. Exceeding these limits may risk equipment failure or injury to staff and client.
3.2. Sports massage requires specific body positioning and mechanical leverage that may be unsafe or ineffective for clients outside certain size parameters.
3.3. In accordance with the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (ACT), the clinic has a duty of care to prevent foreseeable harm to clients and practitioners.
3.4. If the therapist determines that a treatment cannot be conducted safely, the appointment will not proceed.

4. Referral and Client Support

4.1. Clients who cannot be safely treated at the clinic will be offered referrals to other practitioners or facilities equipped with bigger tables and specialised support.
4.2. Referrals will be provided respectfully and confidentially, to ensure the client receives appropriate and safe care elsewhere.
4.3. The clinic will maintain a list of trusted local providers for referral purposes.

5. Privacy, Respect, and Professionalism

5.1. All discussions regarding client suitability, health, or body type will be handled privately and with discretion.
5.2. Staff must treat every client with dignity and professionalism at all times.
5.3. The clinic maintains a zero-tolerance policy for discriminatory behaviour or language.

6. Continuous Improvement and Accessibility

6.1. The clinic is committed to improving accessibility where possible and cost.
6.2. Future facility upgrades will be considered as resources allow.
6.3. Feedback from clients and staff will be reviewed to inform future improvements.

7. Compliance

This policy aligns with the following legislative and professional frameworks:

  • Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (ACT)
  • Privacy Act 1988 (Cth)
  • Australian Human Rights Commission Act 1986

8. Policy Review

This policy will be reviewed annually, or earlier if there are changes to relevant legislation, professional standards, or clinic infrastructure.
