Practical Protection

Realistic self-defence techniques for women!

 Independent Spirit, Community Driven,

I am a fully independent practitioner, proud to operate without affiliation to any single national organisation. This independence allows me the freedom to collaborate with any Canberra-based dojo that shares my core values: techniques that work in a real situation, not flashy techniques that look good for sports, an openness to learn new skills, a deep respect for both students and teachers, and a steadfast dedication to the self-defence art within Canberra.

To ensure a safe and respectful environment for all, I maintain a strict policy: I do not train individuals with a history of violence against women.

To keep this process fair and consistent for everyone, I require all students to hold a current Working with Vulnerable People (WWVP) registration. This is a standard already met by many in the healthcare and security sectors, and it helps ensure our community remains a place of growth and integrity. If our values align, I would love to hear from you."

I am not like other martial arts clubs today, as they will take anyone and don't ask for a WWVP ID to train with them as long as they pay.

Community Impact Statement: Why I Provide Free Self-Defence Training for Women. At Athletic Sports Massage Canberra, I am committed to our community, which extends beyond physical therapy. I provide practical street self-defence training to women at no cost because I believe that the right to feel safe should never be a luxury.

1. Breaking Down Barriers to Safety. For many women, particularly those navigating the challenges of recovery from domestic violence or living with PTSD, financial independence is often a hurdle. By removing the cost of training, I ensure that vital, life-saving skills are accessible to everyone, regardless of their economic situation.

2. A Trauma-Informed Approach to Recovery. Research demonstrates that empowerment-based self-defence (ESD) can significantly reduce symptoms of PTSD. My sessions provide a safe, non-judgmental environment where survivors can:

  • Regain Autonomy: Shift from a state of "freeze" to a proactive, controlled response, helping to "rewire" the nervous system after trauma.
  • Rebuild Confidence: Cultivate the inner strength and resilience needed to move through the world with a reduced sense of fear and anxiety.

3. Addressing the Reality of Modern Safety. In the current climate, women often report feeling less safe in public spaces. While long-term societal change is essential, self-defence provides immediate, functional tools. My training focuses on situational awareness, boundary setting, and effective physical responses—skills that are proven to reduce the risk of victimisation.

4. Strengthening the Canberra Community. The full participation of women in all areas of life is critical to the well-being of our entire city. When women feel safe and empowered, they can contribute more freely to their families, workplaces, and the wider community. This initiative is my contribution to making Canberra a safer, more equitable place for everyone.

5. Empowerment Beyond Physical Skills. True self-defence is as much about the mind as it is the body. It teaches women that their boundaries matter and that they have the right to defend them. This newfound assertiveness often spills over into everyday life, fostering a sense of security and power that goes far beyond the training mat.

Why Learn Practical Street Self-Defence? Investing in self-defence isn’t just about physical protection; it’s about building a mindset that prepares you for life’s uncertainties.

  • 1. Realistic Personal Safety
Traditional martial arts often rely on "rules." Street self-defence focuses on the unpredictable, teaching you how to survive being grabbed, pinned, or facing multiple attackers.
  • 2. Unshakeable Confidence
Knowing you can handle yourself changes how you carry yourself. This self-assurance alone is often enough to deter potential predators.
  • 3. Sharp Situational Awareness
The best fight is the one you aren’t in. You’ll learn to identify red flags and de-escalate threats before they ever turn physical.
  • 4. Functional Fitness & Reflexes
Training builds the specific strength, agility, and explosive power needed to respond instantly under pressure.
  • 5. Stress Conditioning
By simulating real-life scenarios, you train your brain to stay calm and focused. This prevents the "freeze" response and keeps you decisive during a crisis.
  • 6. True Empowerment
For those who feel vulnerable, this training provides a sense of agency. You are no longer a victim; you are a person with the tools to protect your life.
  • 7. Legal & Ethical Understanding
We discuss the reality of self-defence law, helping you understand what is permissible and necessary to protect yourself within the law.
  • 8. Adaptability
Street confrontations happen in car parks, hallways, or crowds. You’ll learn techniques that work in confined, "real-world" spaces where traditional styles often fail.
  • 9. Discipline & Focus
The mental toughness required for self-defence carries over into your professional and personal life, improving your ability to handle everyday stress.

Ready to Start? Your First SessionTaking the first step into a self-defence space can be daunting, so I make your initial session straightforward, safe, and focused on building immediate confidence.

What to Expect in Session One:

  1. Safety & Values Briefing: We begin with a clear discussion on our code of conduct, the legal principles of self-defence, and my zero-tolerance policy for aggressive behaviour.
  2. Initial Assessment: I’ll assess your current baseline—your movement, balance, and natural reactions—to tailor the training to your specific needs.
  3. The "Big Three" Basics: You won’t be overwhelmed with complex routines. We focus immediately on the three pillars of survival:
    • Awareness: Identifying "red flag" behaviours and exit routes.
    • Distance: Learning how to use your voice and body positioning to keep a threat away.
    • The Guard: How to protect your head and vital areas if a situation turns physical.

  1. Practical Drill: You’ll finish the session with one simple, repeatable technique (like a basic block or palm strike) that you can practice at home.

What to Bring:

  • Comfortable workout gear (no zippers or jewellery at all that can catch or damage other people's).
  • A water bottle.
  • Your WWVP ID: This is required before your first formal drill.

Ray Flaherty's Training

A martial artist in a dojo holding a black belt.

Ray's Training

 Martial Arts Training

  1. Ray has been training in the martial arts since the age of 12 years in Judo, Wing Chun, Karate, Chin Na, Muay Thai,  Arnis, and more under different high-level students, Senseis, Sifus or Masters of different styles.
  2. Grandmaster Chan Tze Lung (Chinese family name) from Japan has graded Ray to a higher black belt level and has mastered his full training. Ray has trained under Grandmaster Chan and his late wife, and now his wife, Master Yoko, for over 30 years and still does to this day. This is a multi-style training within the family. This is also where Ray learnt the healing arts for over 30 years and still does as a closed-door student. (This is not a commercial martial art like Karate and Kung Fu, and is not well-known like others due to who he taught and the way it was taught as personal protection training, not for everyone.) So there is no website or classes given, as you have to be picked at a young age. Ray has been training since he was 12 years old and has passed the full senior Master's instructor level on his last Asia trip in 2025.
  3. Ray has trained in Tai Chi (Yang Style and a session with Master Fu Sheng Yuan in Canberra in 1993 from China), Chi Kung and more.
  4. As a private student, Ray trained under Sensei Mark Greville in the 80s in Shorin Ryu, Shorinkan Okinawan Karate. (Ray fixed Sensia's Marks' 4-wheel drive bodywork for private lessons) Sensei Mark was one of the best teachers and a humble man he has trained under.
  5. Diploma, Black Belt Shotokan (Graded by 7th Dan Murakami Sensei from Japan, with Yuki Senpai on their trip to Australia in 1992.
  6. Ray trained under Master Kanazawa, 10th Dan, when he came to Canberra from Japan.
  7. Trained under Sensei Tim Duffy, 3rd Dan North Canberra Shotokan Karate, Ray was hand-picked to run his one-day class in Sensei Tim's dojo in North Canberra. Ray was also the assistant instructor for South Canberra Shotokan Club under Kerry Flynn, 3rd Dan, world champion at the time.
  8. Ray has also done training with Practical Wing Chun in Canberra, but no longer does!
  9. Teaching women's self-defence for many years.
